Job Summary
The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the installation, inspection, preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and management of medical equipment throughout the hospital. The role ensures that all biomedical equipment is safe, functional, and compliant with regulatory standards to support uninterrupted patient care and clinical operations.
Key Responsibilities1. Medical Equipment Management
- Install, inspect, test, and commission new medical equipment.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all biomedical equipment.
- Ensure equipment is operational and available for clinical use.
- Assign asset identification numbers and maintain asset records.
2. Preventive Maintenance
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules.
- Perform routine inspections and servicing of medical equipment.
- Ensure maintenance activities are completed within the scheduled time.
- Maintain detailed preventive maintenance records.
3. Breakdown Maintenance
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns.
- Diagnose faults and perform repairs.
- Coordinate with authorized service providers when required.
- Minimize equipment downtime through timely corrective maintenance.
4. Calibration and Quality Assurance
- Coordinate periodic calibration of medical equipment.
- Verify equipment accuracy and performance after calibration.
- Maintain calibration certificates and related documentation.
- Ensure compliance with NABH and applicable regulatory standards.
5. Equipment Installation and Commissioning
- Coordinate site preparation before installation.
- Supervise installation and acceptance testing.
- Verify equipment performance against manufacturer specifications.
- Train users on basic operation and safety precautions.
6. Documentation
- Maintain service history for each equipment asset.
- Record preventive maintenance, repairs, calibration, and breakdowns.
- Maintain Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) and Comprehensive Maintenance Contract (CMC) records.
- Prepare monthly maintenance reports and equipment status reports.
7. Vendor and Contract Management
- Coordinate with vendors for warranty services, AMC, and CMC.
- Monitor vendor performance and service quality.
- Verify service reports and invoices.
- Assist in evaluating new equipment and service providers.
8. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with NABH standards and hospital policies.
- Follow manufacturer recommendations for equipment maintenance.
- Support internal and external quality audits.
- Maintain documentation required for accreditation and inspections.
9. Safety Management
- Ensure electrical safety testing of medical equipment.
- Identify and report equipment-related risks.
- Remove unsafe equipment from service immediately.
- Promote safe operation of all biomedical devices.
10. Inventory and Spare Parts Management
- Maintain stock of essential spare parts and accessories.
- Monitor inventory levels and initiate procurement requests.
- Maintain records of spare parts usage and replacement history.
11. User Training
- Conduct orientation and refresher training for doctors, nurses, and technicians.
- Educate users on proper operation, basic troubleshooting, and preventive care.
- Promote safe handling and appropriate use of medical equipment.
12. Coordination
- Work closely with Operation Theatre, ICU, Emergency, Radiology, Laboratory, Dialysis, Cath Lab, Nursing, Maintenance, Purchase, and IT Departments.
- Support clinical departments during equipment emergencies.
- Assist in planning for new equipment procurement and replacement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering (B.E./B.Tech Biomedical Engineering) or an equivalent qualification.
- Additional certifications in medical equipment management or clinical engineering are desirable.
Experience
- Junior Biomedical Engineer: 1–3 years of experience in a hospital.
- Experience with critical care and diagnostic equipment is preferred.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of medical equipment safety standards.
- Familiarity with ICU, OT, Radiology, Laboratory, Dialysis, Cath Lab, and Emergency equipment.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance planning and calibration.
- Experience in AMC/CMC management.
- Proficiency in MS Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
