Full job description

Clinical Perfusionist - operates and maintains life-sustaining equipment during surgeries, particularly those involving the heart and lungs. This includes setting up, operating, and maintaining cardiopulmonary bypass machines and ECMO machines. They are responsible for managing the patient's physiological state, ensuring proper blood circulation, oxygenation, temperature regulation, and the administration of medications.

  • Operate and manage the heart-lung machine (CPB) during cardiac surgical procedures as per approved protocols.
  • Prepare, check and ensure readiness of the perfusion equipment, circuits, oxygenators, pumps and related accessories before surgery.
  • Conduct pre-operative assessment and review of relevant patient parameters required for safe perfusion.
  • Maintain appropriate blood flow, perfusion pressure, temperature, oxygenation and acid-base balance during CPB.
  • Monitor and manage perfusion parameters continuously and communicate significant changes to the surgical and anaesthesia team.
  • Assist in procedures requiring ECMO, IABP or other extracorporeal support, within approved clinical privileges and competency.
  • Maintain accurate and complete perfusion records, patient monitoring records and procedure documentation.
  • Follow hospital policies for infection prevention, biomedical waste management, medication safety and patient safety.
  • Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, maintenance and safe handling of perfusion equipment after each procedure.
  • Participate in emergency cardiac procedures and resuscitation support as required.
  • Identify and promptly report equipment malfunction, adverse events, complications or deviations from standard protocols.
  • Participate in quality improvement, clinical audits, incident reporting, training and competency assessment as required by the hospital.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with hospital policies, professional ethics and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate effectively with cardiac surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, technicians and other clinical teams to ensure safe patient care.
  • Maintain professional competency through continuing education, training, drills and updates in perfusion practices.
