Chief Engineer – Repair & Maintenance (University Campus)

Position Title: Chief Engineer – Repair & Maintenance

Department: Engineering / Repair & Maintenance

Reporting To: General Manager – Hospitality / Director - Hospitality

Location: University Campus, Visakhapatnam

Job Purpose

The Chief Engineer – Repair & Maintenance is responsible for planning, directing, and managing all engineering, maintenance, repair, and infrastructure operations across the university campus. The role ensures uninterrupted functioning, safety, sustainability, statutory compliance, and optimal performance of campus facilities including academic buildings, hostels, laboratories, utilities, roads, landscaping, and residential quarters.

Key Responsibilities

1. Campus Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Oversee preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance of all campus infrastructure and utility systems.
  • Ensure proper upkeep of:
  • Academic buildings
  • Administrative offices
  • Hostels and guest houses
  • Staff quarters
  • Laboratories and research facilities
  • Auditoriums and sports complexes
  • Roads, drainage, and water supply systems
  • Monitor structural stability and coordinate civil repairs and renovations.

2. Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) Systems

  • Supervise operation and maintenance of:
  • Electrical distribution systems
  • DG sets and UPS systems
  • HVAC and air-conditioning systems
  • Plumbing and sanitation systems
  • Elevators
  • STP/WTP systems
  • Solar and energy management systems
  • Ensure uninterrupted utility services across the campus.

3. Repair & Maintenance Planning

  • Develop annual maintenance schedules and long-term infrastructure improvement plans.
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and repair costs.
  • Prepare maintenance budgets and control expenditures.
  • Maintain inventory of engineering spares, tools, and consumables.

4. Project Management

  • Execute renovation, refurbishment, and minor construction projects.
  • Coordinate with architects, consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Monitor project timelines, quality standards, and cost controls.
  • Verify contractor bills and work completion certificates.

5. Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, safety norms, and environmental standards.
  • Conduct periodic safety audits for electrical, fire, and structural systems.
  • Implement emergency response procedures and disaster management protocols.
  • Liaise with government authorities and inspection agencies when required.

6. Team Leadership

  • Lead and supervise engineering staff, technicians, supervisors, and outsourced maintenance personnel.
  • Allocate duties and monitor workforce productivity.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and technical training programs.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and service excellence.

7. Vendor & Contract Management

  • Manage AMC contracts and service agreements.
  • Evaluate vendor performance and ensure SLA compliance.
  • Negotiate procurement of maintenance materials and engineering services.

8. Sustainability & Energy Management

  • Promote energy-efficient systems and sustainable engineering practices.
  • Monitor electricity, water, and fuel consumption.
  • Recommend cost-saving and green campus initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil / Electrical / Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Professional certifications in facilities management, project management, or safety management are desirable.

Experience

  • 15–20 years of experience in engineering maintenance and infrastructure management.
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership role managing large institutional campuses, universities, hotels or corporate campuses.
  • Experience handling multi-disciplinary engineering services and large maintenance teams.
