Full job description

A Cost Estimator is responsible for analyzing construction drawings, specifications, and project requirements to prepare accurate cost estimates for commercial, institutional, industrial, residential, and infrastructure projects. The role involves evaluating labour, materials, equipment, subcontractor pricing, and project risks to support competitive and profitable bids.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review drawings, specifications, tender documents, and contracts.
  • Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Analyze labour, material, equipment, and overhead costs.
  • Prepare bid submissions, tender packages, and project budgets.
  • Identify project risks, opportunities, and value-engineering options.
  • Maintain estimating databases and historical cost records.
  • Collaborate with project managers, consultants, and clients during the bidding process.
  • Assist with change order pricing and cost control throughout project execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related field.
  • Experience in construction estimating and bid preparation.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and building codes.
  • Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Planswift, On-Screen Takeoff, CostX, Procore, or similar).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and communication abilities.

Preferred Experience

  • Commercial, healthcare, institutional, municipal, or industrial construction projects.
  • Experience with CCDC contracts and public tendering processes.
  • Knowledge of procurement and subcontractor management.
