Full job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Medical Research Associate specializing in Gastroenterology to join our team supporting a US-based healthcare practice. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in life sciences, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline who have a strong interest in medical research, clinical chart review, and healthcare documentation.

The successful candidate will support gastroenterology-related medical research, review and organize patient medical records, prepare clinical summaries, and assist healthcare providers with accurate, evidence-based documentation. The ideal candidate should be comfortable interpreting medical terminology, reviewing clinical information, conducting literature searches, and maintaining high standards of accuracy and confidentiality.

This is a non-clinical support role. The associate will assist with research and documentation and will not independently diagnose conditions, recommend treatments, or make clinical decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct medical literature reviews on gastroenterological conditions, diagnostic procedures, treatment approaches, and evidence-based clinical guidelines.
  • Review patient medical records, physician notes, diagnostic reports, laboratory results, and relevant clinical documentation as assigned.
  • Prepare concise and accurate clinical summaries based on available patient records and established documentation guidelines.
  • Research common gastrointestinal conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and liver and pancreatic disorders.
  • Assist in organizing patient histories, clinical findings, diagnostic information, and relevant medical documentation for provider review.
  • Identify missing information, inconsistencies, or documentation gaps and escalate them to the appropriate healthcare team member.
  • Search reputable medical databases, including PubMed and other peer-reviewed literature sources, to gather relevant clinical evidence.
  • Prepare research summaries, reference materials, and reports to support physicians and healthcare operations.
  • Maintain accurate records and follow established workflows, documentation standards, and quality-control procedures.
  • Handle protected health information (PHI) securely and follow applicable HIPAA requirements, privacy policies, and organizational procedures.
  • Collaborate with physicians and administrative team members to complete assigned research and documentation tasks within deadlines.
  • Stay updated on relevant gastroenterology literature, clinical terminology, and documentation practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in medical research, clinical documentation, medical chart review, or a healthcare-related role.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and basic human anatomy and physiology.
  • Familiarity with common gastrointestinal disorders and gastroenterology-related diagnostic procedures.
  • Excellent written English and the ability to summarize complex medical information clearly and accurately.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail when reviewing clinical records and research materials.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other digital documentation tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and follow standardized workflows.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality, data security, and ethical handling of patient information.
  • Willingness to work according to the schedule and time-zone requirements of a US-based healthcare practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting a gastroenterologist, gastroenterology clinic, or US-based healthcare practice.
  • Experience reviewing electronic health records (EHRs), physician notes, laboratory reports, diagnostic findings, and patient histories.
  • Familiarity with US healthcare terminology, clinical documentation workflows, and medical abbreviations.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA privacy and security principles, with a willingness to complete required training.
  • Experience conducting literature searches using PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, or similar databases.
