Medical Coder – Roles and Responsibilities

A Medical Coder plays an important role in the healthcare industry by reviewing patient medical records and translating diagnoses, procedures, and healthcare services into standardized medical codes. Medical Coders help ensure accurate medical documentation, billing, and insurance claim processing. They must understand Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, and coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, depending on their job responsibilities. They are also responsible for following coding guidelines, maintaining patient confidentiality, identifying documentation gaps, and supporting accurate reimbursement processes.
