Sample Network Interview Questions And Answers

Below are some sample network interview questions and answers:

1. How businesses are required to use a VPN?

Since many businesses are now letting their employees work remotely, they would likely ask you a question about VPNs.

Example: "Most important use of VPNs is that they let users securely connect to an organisations' network. We had employees working remotely in my previous organisation and to ensure that all our data was protected, I had set up VPNs on all remote computers. Without this our business would have been susceptible to security threats."

2. What are the important characteristics that a good network administrator requires to have?

Employers want to see that you value the same things that they do. With this question, you can show that you understand what it takes to be a good network administrator.

Example: "Network administrators who are just starting their career require to be good at solving complex problems. They also require to be curious and enjoy learning new things, and have strong communication skills which is necessary to work effectively with everyone else involved in the team."

3. What is the difference between a hub, switch and router?

The purpose of this question is to gauge your level of knowledge. It is simple and you are required to provide a clear answer to this. Your answer would not only show your knowledge but would also provide you with an opportunity to showcase your communication skills.

Example: "Hubs, switches and routers are all pieces of equipment used to connect computers to one another. A hub broadcasts data to every available port and is the simplest of all devices. Hubs are the most economical of the three but are also the most susceptible to security concerns. Switches only provide data to the requesting port and are more complicated than hubs. Routers direct data where it needs to go securely and efficiently and act as mini-computers."

4. We have our office network set up as a Workgroup. Is this the best method?

The interviewer wants to see if you know the best practices for security within an office setting or they are looking for advice.

Example: "For an office setting, it would be better if you go with a Domain setup for your computer network. Workgroup setups are more suitable for home networks because they are less efficient than domain setup. In a Workgroup setup, all computers are peers of one another, which makes it less secure. Instead, a domain setup is more secure and efficient as it allows to monitor access and security permissions in all other computers."

5. Do you have any experience with proxy servers? If yes, how did you protect them?

Proxy servers help businesses protect themselves online. A good network administrator would know where and when to use them, along with how to protect them.

Example: "In my previous organisation, we used proxy servers to prevent unwanted users from gaining access to our network. To protect it, we followed multiple steps like limiting the number of proxy servers, controlling where the proxy service could be accessed from and shutting it off when we are using it. I also used to regularly check the proxy server logs and look for issues."
