RRB conducts yearly exams to hire candidates in Group C and various other railway posts. How Much Does The Group Railway Make?

If you are considering a career in the government sector, you may wonder "How much does the Group C railway make?". The salary of a Group C railway employee depends upon the post they hold in the railways. Here are a few posts you can work on after clearing the RRB Group C examination.

  • Senior officer (accounts), senior travelling inspector of accounts (TIA) and senior inspector of stores accounts: The grade pay of the Group C railway employees is ₹4,800 and they are in the pay band PB-2 ₹9,300–₹34,800.

  • Nursing sister: The grade pay of a nursing sister is ₹4,800 and they are in the pay band PB-2, ₹9,300–₹34,800.

  • Matron and chief matron: The grade pay of a matron/chief matron is ₹5,400 and they are in the pay band PB-3, ₹15,600–₹39,100.

  • Primary school teacher, postgraduate teacher, trained graduate teacher: The grade pay for basic grade teachers is ₹4,800 and they are in the pay band PB-2, ₹9,300–₹34,800. But the grade pay for senior grade teachers is ₹5,400 and they are in the pay band PB-4, ₹15,600–₹39,100. If a candidate gets hired as a selection grade teacher, their grade pay is ₹6,600 and they are in the pay band PB-3, ₹15,600–₹39,100.

  • Stationmaster/traffic apprentice/commercial apprentice: The grade pay of a station master is ₹4,600 and their pay scale is ₹9300–₹34,800. After clearing the RRB NTPC exam, you are eligible to get hired for the role of a station master, traffic apprentice and commercial apprentice.

The salary of all railway employees is according to the 7th central pay commission (7CPC). This commission recommends changes in the salary structure of central government employees, including railway employees.

RRB Group C Examination

The RRB handles the recruitment of Group C by conducting various national level examinations. The RRB conducts three main examinations to hire candidates in the Group C category.


After clearing the RRB non-technical popular categories (NTPC) examination, candidates can join railways as junior clerk cum typist, trains clerk, goods guard, station master, junior timekeeper and traffic assistant. Their salary depends on the job role. According to the 7CPC, the average salary of RRB NTPC may range from ₹19,900–₹35400.


JE or junior engineer is a supervisory role and requires a candidate to clear an RRB examination. The grade pay of a JE is ₹4,200 and their pay band is ₹35,400 – ₹11,24,000. RRB JE recruits' candidates in five specialisations, namely electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics and telecommunication engineering and information technology engineering.

RRB assistant loco pilot (ALP) is another Group C category examination that hires loco pilots, loco foremen and senior assistant loco pilots. These Group C employees are eligible to receive HRA, DA, transport allowance and running allowance. According to the 7CPC, the average salary of NTPC ranges from ₹19,900–₹35400.

Perks And Benefits Of A Group C Railway Employees

Employees working in Group C of Indian railways are eligible for various perks and benefits. Some of these are:

Dearness allowance

The railways pay all their employee's dearness allowance (DA) to offset the impact of inflation. Based on their pay scale, every Group C employee receives a fixed amount of DA every month, which is periodically changed to account for the impact of inflation. But, apprentices do not receive the dearness allowance from railways.

Breakdown allowance

Non-gazetted railway employees working in Group C are eligible to receive a monthly breakdown allowance. The allowance depends on the pay scale on which an employee gets hired. Railway treats this allowance as a compensatory allowance and is not admissible to employees who do not turn up for the breakdown during a stipulated time.

House rental allowance (HRA)

Railway provides all Group C employees who do not have government accommodations facilities with HRA. Based on the city of residence, the HRA may vary. Often, the HRA is higher in metros and cities when compared to small towns and villages.

Child education allowance (CEA)

Railways reimburse the expenditure of their employees spend on children education. The amount varies depending on the pay scale of the Group C employee. A Group C employee can avail the CEA for two children until they complete their 10+2.

Daily allowance

Indian Railways pays all its Group C employees daily allowance for an official journey beyond eight kilometres from their office. It varies based on the duration of absence from railway headquarters and varies from 30% to 100% of the grade pay scale. Often, railways pay this allowance in advance to employees who are travelling due to official work.

Night duty allowance (NDA)

Every Group C staff working in a confidential capacity and workshop staff are eligible to receive NDA if they perform night duties in any capacity. The night allowance is the summation of an employee's DA and grade pay. The NDA changes every time the government changes the DA.

Conveyance allowance

Group C employees who travel extensively within a short distance from the headquarters can receive a conveyance allowance. Employees who receive daily allowance cannot receive the conveyance allowance. Also, employees who travel using their vehicle can receive motorcycle or scooter allowance instead of conveyance allowance.

Fixed medical allowance (FMA)

Railway pensioners can receive FMA if they live beyond two and a half kilometres from the nearest railway medical centre or hospital. Employees can get the FMA only after retiring from their job. It is a fixed amount provided every month to meet the medical expenses.

Group C Employees' Promotion

RRB Group C employees can earn promotions based on their performance in departmental exams conducted by the railways. Upon clearing their general departmental competitive examination (GDCE), candidates can become Group B employees. Group B employees work in gazetted roles. All Group C jobs are supervisory and they cannot work as gazetted officers. Candidates are eligible to apply for departmental exams after every year of working in Indian Railways. Educational Qualification Of Group C Employees

As the railways hire for different job roles under the Group C category, the educational requirement varies based on the job role. For instance, a station master job requires candidates to complete their bachelor's degree from a recognised college. Whereas the minimum educational qualification for becoming a ticket collector or training apprenticeship is completing a secondary school certificate (SSC) or 10th class.

When giving the RRB NTPC examination, the minimum educational qualification required is 10+2, but a graduate degree is necessary for senior positions. Similarly, for becoming a JE, candidates require an engineering degree from a recognised university. If a candidate plans to become an ALP, the minimum eligibility criteria are SSC certification, ITI course or diploma degree. So, before deciding on a career path, understand the bare minimum educational qualification required.
