The desktop support role is key in the information technology department of many organisations to help resolve computer and networking software, and hardware issues. How To Write A Resume For A Desktop Support Position?

Here are eight steps you can follow when writing a desktop support resume:

1. Read the job description

Before drafting your resume, determine the qualification requirements for the role. Employers typically include information about the academic qualifications, professional certifications, experience and skills necessary for a position in the job description. You can also find the specific job functions of the role there. Some employers may also include information about the work environment, organisational culture and compensation. Reading the job description can help you evaluate your credentials and identify the most relevant ones. It may also allow you to create a targeted resume that presents you as an ideal fit for the role.

2. Choose a resume format

If you have extensive work experience and want to make it the focus of your resume, format the document using the reverse-chronological layout. This format requires listing your credentials from the most recent to the oldest. If you have little or no work experience, consider using the functional resume format. This layout emphasises your skills and achievements. Alternatively, you can use the combination format to highlight your work history and skills.

3. Write your name and contact details

Start your resume with your full name at the top. Use bold or larger fonts to make your name more visible and memorable. Next, list your phone number, professional email address and location. A formal email address typically comprises a combination of your names. It is advisable to use a private email address rather than one that a former or current employer to avoid ethical issues with the new company. You can also include links to your work-related social media accounts. This can give a hiring manager multiple ways to contact you for updates about your application.

4. Create a professional summary

A professional summary is two or three sentences summarising your resume that quickly shows hiring managers your most important skills, academic and professional qualifications, and experience. Use this section to highlight relevant previous job functions and relate them to specific skills from the job description. For example, if the role involves solving networking issues, you can mention your networking certification and write how you helped resolve internet connectivity issues at a former company. You can also include your ambitions for the role and mention the job title that interests you.

5. Include your work experience

In the experience section, outline the most relevant positions you held and your key job duties, and achievements. For each entry, include the job title, company name, employment dates and location. Describe your relevant work functions and accomplishments in three to five bullet points, starting each point with an active verb to make it more impactful. Also, remember to quantify your achievements.

For example, you can talk about the number of tickets you resolved per week or describe how your automation skills helped employees save time on repetitive tasks. Try to include keywords from the job description. This can increase your chances of passing the filters of applicant tracking systems.

6. List your skills

Listing job-relevant abilities can show a hiring manager you have the hard and soft skills to work in their role. Desktop support technicians require proficiency in technical areas, such as hardware and software configuration, diagnosis and troubleshooting, networking, documentation, programming, security and operating systems. These competencies are key because this job typically involves resolving issues affecting computer, networking and database management systems.

Your employer may also ask you to train end users regarding recurrent issues and their solutions. This role usually requires good communication skills, as you may collaborate with other people and help non-technical users. Interpersonal, active listening, teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking skills are also helpful in this position.

7. Outline your education

List your education from the most recent to the oldest. Include the name of the academic certification, the awarding institution and its location. Employers often require desktop support candidates to have a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or related fields. Some companies may accept experienced candidates with diplomas or professional certifications in desktop support, technical support and other relevant credentials.
