What Is An Electrical Engineering Resume?

An electrical engineering resume is an official document that highlights your educational background, skills and work experience. You can use this resume to apply for electrical engineering roles in multiple industries and organisations requiring technical experts to design and test their electrical systems. Using a resume, a potential employer determines whether you are a suitable choice for the position.

How To Write An Electrical Engineering Resume

Follow these steps to create an electrical engineer resume:

1. Choose a format

Start your resume writing process by selecting a resume format. You can choose from three fundamental resume formats, functional, chronological and a combination resume. Each of these resume formats is different and may benefit an electrical engineer. For instance, if you have vast experience, you can use a chronological resume as it helps you highlight your experience and competencies. You can use a functional resume if you have wide industry-related skills. A combination resume is beneficial for someone who has vast experience and skills in electrical engineering.

2. Read the job description

After selecting the resume format, read the job description carefully. Pay attention to specific details and skills an employer looks for in a potential candidate. Pick out some keywords and skills from the job description and use them in your resume. This step is necessary to ensure you write information in your resume relevant to your role's responsibility. When you include keywords in your resume, you make your resume applicant tracking system (ATS) compliant and increase your chances of getting shortlisted for a desirable job.

3. Add your contact information

Include your contact information at the top of your resume, either in the centre or intended to one side. Write your full name followed by your full address, phone number and email address. Writing contact information at the top helps an employer to contact you.

Example:

Honey Kwatra

Flat no 2908, Pocket Z

Savita Vihar New Delhi 110087

8798907222

Honey.kwatra@mmail.com

4. Write a professional summary

After your contact information, write a one or two-liner professional summary. It is a synopsis of your professional goals and skills. Focus on summarising your interest, aspiration and experience. This section is important because an employer reads your resume further after reading your resume summary. When writing your resume summary, focus on using action verbs like “organised”, “motivated” or “dedicated”. These words can help in capturing the attention of a hiring manager.

Example: Detailed-oriented and dedicated electrical engineer with seven years of experience in providing best in class integrated circuit designs, sound quality procedures, sensor production and validation testing. Proven technical skills to drive profitable and cost-effective collaboration between critical business functions and engineering.

5. Give details of your work experience

List each work experience in chronological order to provide a timeline of your career progression to your employers. Add a few job duties you completed after mentioning your job title and employer's name, location and employment date. Wherever possible, justify your job duties by including a number or percentage to show how you helped an organisation improve their processes or revenue. You can use an action verb before each job responsibility to engage a potential employer in your resume content. Some action verbs to use can include minimise, accelerate, generate, introduce, deliver, support, increase or streamline.

Example:

  • Performed circuit design, assembly and board layout

  • Developed validation and acceptance plans for electrical systems with 100% accuracy

  • Fully trained 15+ junior employees by providing training and guidance on electrical systems and integrated circuit boards

  • Redesigned the control circuitry for increasing process efficiency by 30%

6. Mention your educational qualifications

Most employers prefer hiring electrical engineers with a BTech/BE or MTech/ME degree. So, it is essential to mention the degree you earned in electrical engineering in your resume. After writing the name of the degree you earned, mention the institution you attended and the year you graduated. If you have a post-graduation or a doctorate, consider writing them in chronological order by first writing your most recent degree.

If you have some professional certification in electrical engineer, include them in this section. Also, if you are a recent graduate, it may be helpful to list your project accomplishment to make your resume more presentable.

Example:

M.Tech, Mumbai College of Engineering, Navi Mumbai

2015—2017

7. Include relevant certifications

Consider adding all your completed certifications and training in your educational qualification section. For instance, if you completed a programmable logic controller (PLC) certification course, you can mention the duration and institute from where you completed this certification. Mentioning your certifications makes you a desirable candidate for an electrical engineering role. If you have many certificate courses to list, consider prioritising options that align with the job description and work history.

Example: Completed a certificate course in the maintenance of transmission and distributed systems for electrical engineers from The Electrical Training Institute, Pune.

8. List your skills

Include a list of skills that align with the job description. You can either provide a bullet list of five to ten skills or briefly explain the most relevant skills in one or two sentences. List both your hard and soft skills to make your resume stand out from the competition.

Example:

  • Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processor software

  • Circuit design knowledge

  • Knowledge of C, C++, Python

  • Electrical measurements

  • Innovative and critical thinking skills

  • Problem-solving

  • Leadership

9. Proofread your resume

Before uploading your resume on different job portals and job application boards, proofread your resume to check for grammatical and spelling errors. Ensure you spell the name of your previous employer correctly. Also, cross-check the correct usage of the action verbs you used in the work experience. While proofreading your resume, ensure your information is not too repetitive; otherwise, the hiring manager may lose interest. To find errors in your resume, read the content aloud and make necessary changes.
