In this article, we examine how to write a professional industrial engineering resume and provide a template and an example.

What Is An Industrial Engineering Resume?

An industrial engineering resume is a document that lists out an industrial engineer's educational qualifications and other relevant skills. A crucial part of the resume is their work experience and relevant details of their previous work projects. The goal of the resume is to get a candidate shortlisted for more interviews, which increases the probability of getting the job that they want.

Why Is An Industrial Engineering Resume Important?

Resumes are important because they allow employers to review a candidate's profile to understand if it matches their requirements. Prospective employers can then decide if the candidate can add value to their organisation. Employers usually look for very specific information in a resume. Hence, a well-written resume is important for an industrial engineer.

How To Write A Resume For An Industrial Engineering Role

When you write an industrial engineering resume, include all relevant details that an employer may have specified in their job requirement. It is beneficial to gather the headings and points you want to include beforehand. Give only facts that you can support by documents. Once you prepare a structured resume, you can use it for more than one application. Follow these steps to write an industrial engineering resume:

1. Create a header

Creating a header is the first step towards writing a professional resume. You can include your full name, communication address, phone number and email ID. If you have a professional social media profile, blog, website or online portfolio, you can include those links in the header. Avoid sharing personal profiles in your professional resume. Keep your professional profiles updated so that they are in sync with your resume.

2. Include a summary or objective statement

An objective statement or summary is a brief introduction to yourself. It can be two to three sentences. Choose the right words and phrases that can explain your skill and work experience. The goal of the summary section is to motivate the employer to go through your particular profile. Here is an example:

"I am a certified industrial engineer with 12 years of experience planning and executing large-scale commercial industrial engineering projects. I have experience in blueprint interpretation, tender designing and drawing detailed machine diagrams. I am currently looking for an opportunity to manage large-scale industrial engineering projects in the public sector."

3. List your professional and soft skills

Once you have completed the summary, you can list all specific technical and soft skills like working with maps, reading blueprints and software skills. You can also list managerial skills and leadership skills in this section. Mention a skill using one or two words. For instance, an industrial engineering resume may include skills like CAD design, engineering design, problem-solving, working documentation and coordination.

4. Give details of work experience

In this section, you can list your work experience to date. Start with your current job or your most recent job. List each job separately with a timeline and job responsibilities. Adding specific achievements in your previous roles can add value to your resume. If you have worked in five jobs, out of which three are relevant and two are entry-level jobs, give details about the three relevant roles and provide a single-line description for the first two jobs.

5. List responsibilities handled so far

In this section, you can highlight every duty and responsibility that you have performed so far. This section can also be in bullet points. Here is an example:

  • Analysed photographs, drawings and maps to inform the direction of projects and the overall budget constraints

  • Inspected project sites to ensure equipment meets relevant specifications and their functions are progressing properly

6. Add educational qualifications

Start from the highest degree onwards. Mention the name of the course clearly as a diploma or a four-year BE or BTech along with the name of the college or university. Mention the year of graduation. For example, the details of your educational background can look like this:

  • MTech in Mechanical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai in 1995

  • BSc in Industrial Engineering from Delhi University in 1995

7. Add certifications

Apart from educational qualifications, every professional can update their skills to keep up with new technologies and methodologies that improve productivity. Professional Engineering is a certification that is valid for all engineers. There are other specific certification programs that hold value in the domain of industrial engineering. Some certificates that can increase the effectiveness of your resume are:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

  • Structural Engineer (SE)

  • Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE)

8. Format your resume

The structure, formatting and presentation of your resume can impress an employer. A cluttered resume not only makes reading difficult but can also create an unfavourable impression about you. Use formal and clear fonts like Times New Roman, Cambria, Georgia, Garamond, Calibri, Didot and Verdana. You can use bolding for subheadings. Avoid bolding within paragraphs unless it is necessary. Keep the background white and plain.

9. Proofread the resume

Employers are likely to go through many resumes every day and their trained eye can easily catch formatting, grammatical and spelling errors. Proofread the resume more than once to ensure it is error-free. Using online grammar and spell-checking tools for this purpose can be beneficial.

Which Is The Best Format To Send A Resume?

PDFs are the standard format to send official and professional documents, especially those that do not require editing. Unless an application asks for resumes in a particular format, you can send resumes as a PDF attachment. Keep a copy of your resume in other formats like .docx ready in one of your folders.
