How to write a professional resume for job applications
The following key steps will help you to write a resume that stands out among other applicants':
Read the job description. Carefully review the job description in order to understand the qualifications, skills and experience essential for the position. If required, prepare a list of these requirements and match them with those that you possess. This will help you highlight your relevant skills and qualifications. For example, if a position requires a minimum of two years of experience in a certain field or industry, you can specifically mention that you meet or exceed that requirement.
Prepare a list of keywords. Many companies use applicant tracking software to manage online job applications. This software scans and picks up applications on the basis of relevant keywords. Hence, you should prepare a list of keywords for a given position and optimise your resume for those keywords. This will significantly improve the chances of your resume becoming shortlisted during the preliminary automated process.
Begin your resume with a header. The header is the topmost part of your resume. Include your contact details here: your name, postal address, phone number and email. Doing so will make it easier for the hiring manager to contact you.
Write a resume summary. Also known as a career objective, a resume summary highlights your most important skills, qualifications and achievements in two or three sentences. You may also include your career goals. The idea is to tell the employer why you are the best candidate for the position.
Include your educational qualifications. Beginning with the highest level of education, list your educational degrees and certifications in descending order. Include the name of the institution or university and the month and year of completion for each degree or certification.
List your work experience. Depending on the job and industry, you can choose to add a work experience section either before or after the education section. Include all the important details of your past work experiences. In addition to regular positions held, you may also include internships, summer jobs and special projects, but be sure to keep it relevant to the desired job vacancy. For each position listed, state the name of the organisation, location, time period you worked there and job responsibilities.
Highlight your skills. Include professional skills and personality traits that make you eligible for the given job. In addition to job-specific skills, you may also include generic skills in your resume, but they should be relevant to what the employer is looking for in the job description and should be helpful for your duties in some manner. You may either use a comma-separated format or a bulleted list for the skills section.
Proofread your resume. Proofread your resume for typos, spelling mistakes and readability issues. Consider reading aloud to yourself, or ask someone else to review it for you. Make sure that you use a simple font, such as Arial, Georgia or Calibri, and keep the overall look simple and professional. The length of your resume should be within one or two pages.
