Great Company!

I was employed as a contractor through a staffing agency. Best company ever! The management team was very helpful and success driven. I enjoyed my time at DNV-GL.

DNV insights

Based on 3 survey responses
What people like
  • Inclusive work environment
  • Sense of belonging
  • Time and location flexibility

No longer respected, overpriced. Not a good place to work.

DNVGL is interested in only two things. Making money and burning people out at every opportunity. The base pay is fair, but as a surveyor, you are a salaried employee who is expected to work large amounts of overtime for no overtime pay. The management is swamped with projects of their own and have little to no time for the surveyors. Upper management is busy covering their own rear to the home office in Norway. The Houston office is full of foreign management who has not worked anything besides a calculator in their entire lives. I have never worked for a company with such a high dissatisfaction rate among their customers. When DNVGL was known as Det Norske Veritas, they were a good company to work for and well respected, now, that is not the case. They are overpriced and honestly not worth the trouble.

Good place to start a career BUT...

...if you have some years under your belt, don't expect this place to be fulfilling. Leadership is weak and irresponsible, demonstrating incompetence regularly. Worse is the blame game, especially when it comes to financial results. It's usually the market's fault... In many cases, leaders are completely out of their league. (something a newbie wouldn't notice) and generally have little understanding of marketing or branding in the US. Many key positions are filled with inexperienced and/or incompetent people who engender zero confidence amongst the experienced workforce. Relying on fad leadership gimmicks, marginalizing experienced people in favor of the suck up, no discipline to the bottom line... the usual stuff from weak leaders. Take your chances if you must, but if you have the chance to work for one of its many competitors, do that instead.

Pros

decent salary and benefits

Cons

Leadership

Lack of Vision and commitment

DNVGl did not have the cohesive management and vision along with commitment to be successful in the upstream oil and gas industry. The company did not leverage their talent and name brand in areas outside their sphere of influence. Delivered on a business strategy for UOG and the company did not follow they on their commitment.

Pros

High educated staff

Cons

Bad follow thru to customers

Things to improve for DNV GL

1. DNV GL lets people go without considering their contribution to the company enough. 2. The managers play politics a lot. 3. They fire people based the manager's opinion only.

very good work life balance with low long term career advancement opportunity

Really like working at DNV GL, which has a relaxed and encouraging working atmosphere. Colleagues are very nice, and many of them of PHD degrees. They are responsible and highly competent. However, the company is lacking long term career opportunities. as DNV is a certification and verification company, so it is hit very hard by the oil price downturn. Management is working very hard to try to re-define, and re establish its domain market, and succeed. However it is not easy.

Co-workers are amazing

Great culture, but lacking in benefits and training. Management leaves something to be desired. Taking time for vacation is not a problem. This can be a fault sometimes where no one else is around to help.

There is no better company I have experienced

Working for DNV-GL was a dream come true. There are not enough words or even words that could describe the experiences and work life I had while with this company. It breaks my heart that most companies out there are not anywhere near the level that DNV-GL is at.

Pros

everything

Cons

none

Productive and fun work place.

This is a great company to work for. Each Dept. is well trained and the Manager's are invested in helping you accomplish whatever you are trying to get done.

Good work/life balance

It is a wonderful experience to work here in DNVGL although the benefits and compensation are not so good. Transparent management and easily available managers for questions and concerns,

Wide range of inspection opportunities

Great places to work, however getting paid can take a little extra work depending on the persons involved. Lots of different areas to work in and usually consistent work.

Excellent co workers, bad management

Since the merge between DNV and GL the company has not been the same again. The oil crisis did not help, but changes due the merger were extreme, the company did not adapt to the change in the marked.

work life balance

Recently after merger, things changed otherwise good place to work. New CEO is promising and expecting to bring commercial culture and get rid of old way of doing the business.

Pros

Work Life Balance.

Cons

too many overheads and not agile and lean.

Great Place to work in order to grow your career

The employees that work in DNV GL Business Assurance North America are like a family. They work really hard but also love what they do. DNV-GL's purpose is to safeguard life, property, and the environment and every employee that works there truly believes this and is the main reason they work for this company.

Pros

Healthcare Benefits, 401K, MIP process, training

Cons

long hours, travel 50%, work life balance
