A rat race with incompetent upper management

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
After nearly a decade with the company the focus has changed from helping people with their vehicles and tires to extracting every available penny regardless of customer needs. Dishonest practices are ignored and therefore encouraged by district and corporate management who focus purely on unrealistic metrics and focus studies and know nothing about automotive service or building customer relationships. From store manager down to the technicians, prepare to be belittled. Forget about upward mobility, the cronyism is unreal. You either play golf with or married into the management clique (formerly from Target) or you can prepare to rot in place... regardless of how stellar your performance is. If you're a top performer you can expect a pat on the back and a fake gold pin every five years. Wouldn't recommend anyone to work for this company which is swirling the drain (see the 5yr stock chart). 25 year old antiquated point of sale software? Check. Zero company provided training for upcoming techs/salespeople? Check. Zero preparation for changing industry standards? Check. Terrible discount program? Check. Company initiatives designed to take business from the retail stores and money from your paycheck? BIG CHECK. The only positive of working for Goodyear is job stability regardless of lackluster performance and some good people in some stores... just be prepared for a life of mediocrity in a company that survives on name recognition alone.

Good job. Bad company

Pros: - Good learning environment - Good work experience - Plenty of experienced technicians - flexible and open schedule - Great coworkers - Looks after you in a crisis Cons: The management: The management can be a deal breaker for a lot of people. The managers can be good people but lack good abilities to control their emotions. Oftentimes can be very inconsiderate of the people in lower positions. I once dealt with a perfectionist who looked for the best in every single detail. It sounds like a good trait, but it is detrimental to the person in any position under them as you have to be perfect in every aspect. You will be expected to be absolutely perfect in the smallest of things which in turns becomes aggravating. As a technician, it’s reasonable to keep your area clean. As a technician, it is reasonable to do acceptable tasks such as offering help to other technicians when it’s slow. It is also reasonable to keep the shop relatively clean, however, this responsibility should not be directed to mainly you solely. You took this job expecting to be an automotive technician; you expected your job to be working on cars. I have scrubbed walls, cleaned toilets, and have done various extremely daunting tasks just to fill time and “look busy”. It isn't terrible until it becomes a common occurance where you’re doing this more than once a week, or after you just did knee crunching labor. You’ll be doing this multiple hours during the day all just because it’s slow. As an entry-level automotive technician, one half will be working on cars and the -

Management is a JOKE!

This is a dead end job for a technician. You will never get over 30 hours! Management sits in the office all day and does nothing but collect a pay check. Morale in the shop is bad. Work/life balance is a joke! You will work every weekend. They will not send you to training schools to keep your skills fresh on the new technology. Their idea of training is trial and error or send it to the dealer! A typical day was working on some vehicles and listening to the Manager complain about business after sitting in his office for the whole day! Word to the wise. Get all of your promises in WRITING!

Pros

Working on cars.

Cons

Manangement creates a depressed culture. Work/Life balance on weekends.

Dead End Job

No where to grow, its like a dead end. Management isn't adhering to a work/life balance. Your treated as a number to complete tasks rather than self improvement and growth.

Pros

benefits

Cons

no advancement
