Great mission, poor management
Case Manager (Current Employee) - Asheville, NC - July 12, 2022
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedHelpmate has a great and honorable mission to help those impacted by domestic violence. However, company has some serious inequality problems when it comes to staff treatment. There are racial disparities and no clear solutions when problems have been presented. Management is reluctant to change anything...

Great cause/staff, bad leadership
Hired help (Former Employee) - Helpmate - May 17, 2021
Great opportunities to build your skills, learn, and do some good. Some really kind supportive staff and supervisors work there but are powerless. Punitive supervisors are emboldened. Leadership is disconnected, unrealistic, and reactive, especially when stressed, which is often. no safe way to provide feedback up the chain, and it feels like things are getting worse as the best staff keep leaving. A lot of lip service about ideals but not a lot of walking the talk.
Pros
Salary and benefits are ok. Great cause. Some great staff.
Cons
Stressful. Leadership is insulated, reactive.

It's hard work but incredibly fulfilling.
CM (Current Employee) - FJC - May 4, 2020
The external systems are so often stacked against survivors of domestic violence and there often aren't easy/obvious solutions, but the staff are caring and there for the right reasons. It takes a terrific listener and an extremely well balanced person to be present with survivors without imposing your own feelings or choices. It takes a creative person who can continue to explore and explain options with someone even when the options are scary. And it takes a team member who is willing recognize the inequities and imperfections of this world, including those within themselves, and work everyday to improve them.

Thumbs down for management
Hired Help (Former Employee) - Asheville, NC - February 11, 2020
Helpmate has a great team of case managers.
However, I found it very difficult to communicate with 'management in fear of being victimized. My supervisor was disrespectful. Thankfully she doesn't have the opportunity to supervise too many people. I would love to see this organization grow and continue to serve its community, but care needs to be given to employees as well. For a non-profit organization, I expected better. HR personnel is desperately needed.

Management disconnected from staff
Intake Specialist (Former Employee) - Asheville, NC - September 26, 2019
I loved the people (staff) at HM. Management is fully disconnected from day to day. It's a stressful place to work because there is always a huge shortage of employees available. Good people have been let go for no reason. PM is in charge.
The speed of the team is the speed of the managers. Unfortunately, the disconnect is complete.
HM is a non-profit that advocates for survivors of intimate partner violence, but there is a bully working there. People don't feel safe/secure. Very sad. Would return there if other management was in place, in a heartbeat.

Stressful but necessary
Case Mananger (Current Employee) - Asheville, NC - September 14, 2019
Chaotic, everyone is underpaid, stressful but very necessary work. Some really great people work there. The pay scale is pretty bad, but benefits are.... Well they exist.

Helpmate
Shelter Case Manager (Former Employee) - Asheville, NC - November 6, 2018
Work culture is very punitive and unforgiving. Very little support, tremendous responsibility, with low monetary incentive. The Executive Director has little to do with their employees unless they are absent from any of the 7 meetings/month you are required to go to. The job is incredibly stressful (and rewarding) because you are working with destitute, abused, disadvantaged women and expected to work miracles in their lives without having administrative or monetary support from the organization.
Pros
Great relationships with clients/residents
Cons
Administration

Stressful at times, fast paced, had to be assertive to get things done
INTERNSHIP (Former Employee) - Asheville, NC - August 14, 2018
I was an Intern at Helpmate for five months. There I worked at the shelter, answered crisis hotline calls, case management with clients, and assisted clients with individual needs and goal setting.

Meaningful and empowering, yet high-stress environment.
Staff, Part-time (Former Employee) - Asheville, NC - September 19, 2017
Helpmate is an empowering and wonderful non-profit to work for. They pay all employees a living wage, and staff are much more often than not, very supportive of each other. It is understandably so, a stressful, and fast-paced environment that requires a strong ability to react well under pressure and under crisis situations. Giving yourself alot of self-care is definitely important to be able to work for Helpmate, but I would recommend this job to anyone who is passionate about serving others.
Pros
living wage for part-time staff, supportive work environment
Cons
stressful

All of the people are friendly, professional, helpful, and genuinely good people. The atmosphere is wonderful and there are often people being promoted. These people genuinely care about others and show it.

Overnight case manager at DV shelter for women
OVERNIGHT CASE MANAGER (Former Employee) - Asheville, NC - January 29, 2017
Poor work life balance. Overnight case managers aren't as valued as daytime staff. Strange dynamics between senior staff, management and board and new staff weren't always made to feel part of things.
Pros
Gift drawings at monthly meetings
Cons
Overnight staff not included in a lot of special events or made to feel a part of the agency
