Job Purpose

To lead and manage all press shop operations, ensuring production targets are achieved with the required quality, safety, productivity, and cost efficiency. The Press Shop Head is responsible for planning, manpower utilization, machine maintenance coordination, tooling control, and continuous process improvement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Production Planning & Execution

  • Execute daily production as per the Production Planning & Control (PPC) schedule.
  • Ensure timely completion of production targets.
  • Monitor machine utilization and improve overall equipment efficiency (OEE).
  • Minimize production delays and bottlenecks.
  • Coordinate with PPC, Tool Room, Quality, and Maintenance departments.

2. Press Shop Operations

  • Supervise all hydraulic, pneumatic, power press, CNC, and mechanical press operations.
  • Ensure correct setup of dies, tools, and fixtures before production.
  • Monitor production quality during every shift.
  • Reduce machine idle time and improve productivity.
  • Ensure proper material handling within the press shop.

3. Manpower Management

  • Allocate operators according to machine requirements.
  • Maintain attendance and discipline within the department.
  • Train operators in machine operation and safe working practices.
  • Conduct skill development programs.
  • Evaluate employee performance and recommend improvements.

4. Quality Control

  • Ensure production meets approved drawings and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with the Quality Department for first-off, in-process, and final inspections.
  • Reduce rejection, rework, and scrap.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions for quality issues.

5. Tool & Die Management

  • Monitor the condition of dies and punches.
  • Coordinate with the Tool Room for preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Ensure proper storage and identification of tools.
  • Maintain die maintenance records.

6. Machine Maintenance

  • Coordinate preventive maintenance with the Maintenance Department.
  • Report machine breakdowns immediately.
  • Monitor lubrication schedules.
  • Maintain machine performance records.

7. Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all employees use PPE.
  • Maintain compliance with safety rules and statutory requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections.
  • Report accidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping in accordance with 5S standards.

8. Cost Control

  • Reduce scrap and material wastage.
  • Improve productivity and machine utilization.
  • Optimize manpower deployment.
  • Control tooling and maintenance costs.

9. Documentation

  • Maintain daily production reports.
  • Record machine downtime.
  • Maintain rejection and rework reports.
  • Maintain manpower and attendance records.
  • Prepare shift handover reports.
  • Submit daily MIS reports to management.

10. Continuous Improvement

  • Implement Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, and 5S activities.
  • Improve production processes.
  • Reduce setup time using SMED principles where applicable.
  • Suggest cost-saving initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Production Engineering.

Experience

  • 10–15 years in a press shop of a sheet metal manufacturing industry.
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in storage rack, pallet rack, industrial furniture, sheet metal fabrication, or similar manufacturing industries will be preferred.

The Press Shop Head is authorized to:

  • Allocate manpower and machines.
  • Stop production in case of quality or safety concerns.
  • Recommend disciplinary action for violations.
  • Recommend tooling and machine improvements.
  • Approve shift-wise production planning in coordination with PPC.

Working Conditions

  • Manufacturing shop-floor environment.
  • Rotational shifts as required.
  • Extended working hours during production priorities.
  • Regular interaction with Production, Quality, Maintenance, PPC, Stores, and Dispatch teams.

Performance Evaluation

Performance shall be reviewed based on:
