- Conceptual clarity

- Knowledge of Agile development methods
- They are aware of the advantages of Agile development
- Experience using Agile
I have used Agile development methods in many projects as a product owner, as Agile is one of the most common development methodologies. Agile helps to break down the product development process into smaller actionable sprints and helps to increase the team’s efficiency. I appreciate Agile as it enables teams to deliver results quickly and meet our client’s needs.
Should the same person be a product owner as well as a scrum master?

- Thorough understanding of the development process

- They should be articulate while giving reasons for their response
I do not believe that the same person should be a product owner and a scrum master as both roles are different, and merging them will negatively impact the development process. The scrum master is a mediator between the product owner and the development team. So, a different person should serve as the scrum master to avoid the potential conflict of interest.

As a product owner, I use the MoSCow method as it helps me to effectively prioritise the tasks in the backlog, and implement essential bug fixes and new features during the product development cycle.
Do you have experience with user testing?
This question can help you to learn if the candidate understands the importance of user testing during the product development. A product owner has to rely on user testing to get feedback on their product so that they can refine the product according to customer’s needs. What to look for in an answer:
- They understand the importance of user testing
- Experience with gathering user feedback
- A precise method to implement feedback
In my previous roles, I have been involved in multiple rounds of user testing while developing products. User testing ensures a product’s success as it helps us to understand the changes needed to improve the product and satisfy the customer’s needs and expectations. In my previous organisation, while developing an app for a major company, we conducted a round of testing with our employees who had used similar apps before. Then we tested the app with others who didn’t have experience with such apps. The results of user testing with different demographics really helped us refine our app’s features and user interface.
How do you handle the expectations of multiple stakeholders?
As an employer, it is vital to hire a product owner who understands how to manage the expectations of all the stakeholders involved in the product development. This question will help you to hire a candidate who can communicate and coordinate with different stakeholders and ensure the smooth development of a product. What to look for an answer:
- Strong communication skills
- Clarity regarding the product development process
- Previous experience
Effective communication is essential to deal with the expectations of different stakeholders. In my previous role, I frequently communicated with both developers and marketing teams, sharing information about our sprints and release dates while also considering and implementing their valuable suggestions.

A product owner is responsible for releasing quality products that meet the customer’s expectations. This question will allow the candidate to explain the methods they will employ to enhance the value of the development team’s output. What to look for in an answer:
- Quality-oriented mindset
- Knowledge of the right metrics to track performance
- Strong management skills
Optimising the value of the development team’s work is vital to ensure the efficiency of the product development process. I always order the tasks in the project backlog so that the development team always works on the most valuable stories first. I also use KPIs like tracking usage index and measuring revenue generated and customer satisfaction to fine-tune our development efforts.
What would you do if you had an innovative idea for a product feature that was too technically complex for the developers to implement?
This question can help you to understand how the candidate would collaborate with developers to implement their ideas and find solutions. What to look for in an answer:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Adaptability and flexibility
- They can work with the team and find creative solutions to problems
If I had an idea that would elevate the product but was too technically challenging to be implemented, I would first gather extensive feedback from the development team. Then, if the idea is difficult but achievable, I would evaluate its value to the product. If the idea is worth considering, I will collaborate with the development team to brainstorm alternate methods to implement it. Otherwise, I would let it go.
